SUMMARY:Workshop: "New Year\, New Techniques" with Joan de Young
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, Joan will guide you to create your own “Art Quilt” design using different fibers\, fabrics\, and sewing techniques to create a landscape design.  You will use sheer fabrics to create a unique element\, as well as learning how to add texture to areas within your quilt using the twin needle feature on your sewing machine.  You will also explore using bobbin work to define areas or outline sections on your quilts. \n        \nThese are examples of Joan’s work\, but are different from the workshop project which is featured above. \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Lecture: "What the Heck is Fiber Art?" with Joan de Young
DESCRIPTION:Joan is inspired by her surroundings and the environment. She recycles fabrics that she finds in various places or she uses her own dyed and painted pieces. Her evolution into Art Quilting came about when she saw a variety of new and creative quilts displayed at quilt shows.  She designs fabric art pieces manipulating the fabric using bobbin work\, twin needle and couching and even crocheted pieces to add texture and dimension. \nJoan says that there is so much fun and excitement in the challenge of creating the art quilts she daydreams about.  Some of them are quite abstract\, others have messages about the planet.  She’s encouraged and inspired by the members of The Extreme Quilters\, as well as the works of Velda Newman and Katie Pasqini Masopust.  There are so many innovative and creative art quilters and so much inspiration. \nJoan’s art quilts have been exhibited at the Thousand Oaks Art Gallery and at Wailoa Arts & Cultural Center in Hilo\, Hawaii.  She has also had the honor of having one of her quilts being displayed at local guild shows and nationally\, at East Coast Quilt Exhibitions\, along with her fellow Extreme Quilters. Her quilts have also been displayed in an historic building in Bethlehem\, Connecticut. \nWe’re excited to be inspired by Joan’s fiber art creations! \n

SUMMARY:Reverse Appliqué Workshop with Karen Van Den Brink
DESCRIPTION:Our own Karen Van Den Brink has offered to share her knowledge and talent to teach us Reverse Appliqué.  For reverse applique\, the fabric is layered and the top fabric is cut away and stitched in place to reveal the design. The fabric can be used in many layers to create complex designs. The top edges can be finished by hand or machine. The Reverse Applique technique is best represented by Molas from Panama and Hmong Embroidery from China\, Laos\, Thailand and Vietnam\, to embellish clothing and create works of art. Karen will be teaching us a simple heart design with options for more complex designs for those who want more of a challenge. \nHere are some samples of reverse appliqué. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lecture: Scrappy Appliqué with Kristie Naranjo
DESCRIPTION:Kristie is a quilt teacher certified in teaching the Scrappy Appliqué technique developed by Shannon Brinkley. Her main goal in sharing her love of quilting with others is to help them feel confident and comfortable to do anything with the skills they currently have.  She will be sharing the Scrappy Appliqué method as well as a trunk show to inspire your members to create their own projects.\n \nKristie has been using all types of needles and thread in some way ever since she was eight years old. She loves working with her hands which led her to sewing clothes for herself\, embroidery\, cross stitch\, and crochet.  When she was in her thirties\, she started knitting professionally for knitwear designers which led to teaching knitting to elementary kids in an after school program.  In her forties\, she resumed her love of sewing and started quilting after a fateful trip to visit her sister-in-law. Standing in her quilt studio sparked something inside of Kristie and she’s never looked back. Now she’s lucky enough to be a quilt instructor and Certified Teacher for each Scrappy Appliqué™ as well as Color Confidence for Quilters™. She loves teaching at quilting guilds\, quilt shops\, and to individuals looking to learn new and unique techniques. \n         \n \n

SUMMARY:Lecture: Art Quilts Demystified with Sue Rasmussen
DESCRIPTION:Sue\, a charter member of our Association\, has been quilting 50 years since she was in high school. Sue’s first hundred quilts were mostly traditional until she was exposed to art quilt teachers and friends who suggested trying different techniques in her quilting. \nSue is a professional and international Quilt Teacher\, giving lectures and workshops throughout the USA and abroad. Sue has produced an extensive and varied body of work\, including hundreds of quilts\, quilt art\, and quilted clothing\, many having been nationally exhibited. \nThis presentation by Sue will follow her quilts from traditional to art quilts\, talking about ways to bridge that gap that we all think as we say to ourselves “Oh- I can’t do that” or “I don’t make art quilts”.  Sue will share dozens of her quilts\, where you can see first-hand and in person all the assorted uses of fabrics using many different techniques. \n

SUMMARY:Sewing Machine Maintenance Basics with Tim Brown of Kingdom Sewing
DESCRIPTION:Tim Brown of Kingdom Sewing Machine Center in Simi Valley is teaching a basic sewing machine maintenance workshop.  This workshop is for all machines \nTim bought Kingdom Sewing in Northridge back in the 80’s when they sold mainly vacuums\, but he started to sell more sewing machines than vacuums which is still the case today. He opened the second store in Simi Valley about 20 years ago. He has since sold the original Northridge store to an employee several years ago and now devotes his time just to the Simi Valley store\, selling machines\, sewing furniture\, offering classes\, and going to shows to promote his business. \nAbout ten years ago Tim gave a seminar to the Modern Quilt Guild and continues to give maintenance workshops in his shop and other sites. \nFor this workshop\, you will bring your own sewing machine to work on in class.  Enrollment limit: 15

SUMMARY:Zoom Lecture: Lilo Bowman\, "Love Where You Create: It's not a One Size Fits All Solution"
DESCRIPTION:Lilo Bowman has worked as a floral designer\, translator\, tour guide\, wedding planner\, and is now editor-in-chief of TheQuiltShow.com. Her work has been varied\, often challenging\, but always creative. Since early childhood\, she has been instilled with the desire for and love of doing something with your hands\, learned by observing the varied and beautiful items crafted by both of her grandmothers. Raised in a German culture\, Lilo was always keenly aware of and fascinated with objects (whether utilitarian or decorative) that were attractively displayed while still being orderly. \nOne of Lilo’s greatest joys is helping others organize and build a creative space that they absolutely love.  So…are you overwhelmed by all the stuff that seems to be taking over but don’t know how to bring back order?  If your current situation isn’t functioning — it might be time to hit the refresh button.  Learn how to build a creative place that works for you\, your space\, your budget and where you are right now.  Her lecture will offer real studio situations and insights on how to gain control over all the stuff that has taken over YOUR space.  So whether your studio is large or small\, Lilo has ideas for you!

SUMMARY:Speaker: California Heritage Quilt Project
DESCRIPTION:The mission of the California Heritage Quilt Project was established at its inception in 1984 and remains relevant to this day.  Its mission is:  to seek out and record the history of California quilts and quiltmakers; to foster conservation and preservation of California’s quilt heritage; to increase public awareness and appreciation of quilts; and to encourage the art of quilt making. \nCHQP was very active from 1984 thorugh 2014.  Its previous Board President\, Stephanie Kenney\, kept the organization viable during a time of waning interest\, and she continued its mission on several fronts.  Arlene Stevens\, who will our speaker this evening\, and Rebecca Blosser joined the Board in September 2021\, and now new Board members have been found statewide to further the goals of the CHQP. \nThe California Heritage Quilt Project has been revived and is looking forward to continuing the mission established in 1984.  They are honoring the work of the past and the projects that were so successful\, such as the quilt documentation\, oral histories\, and the children’s teaching program.  They have recently joined the Quilt Index in order to introduce the world to amazing quilts made in or brought to California.  The Quilt Index\, an open access\, digital repository\, shares images\, stories\, and information about quilts and their makers. \nJoin Arlene Stevens\, the current president of CHQP\, on zoom this evening to learn more about this amazing organization and their work. \nTheir website:  https://chqp.org/home \n                           \n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop: Quilted Jigsaw Puzzle Technique by Kim Brownell
DESCRIPTION:Using the quilted Jigsaw Puzzle technique\, students can combine two hobbies\, because it is very much like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle.  A raw-edge fusible applique is used\, leaving a negative space between each piece.  The background fabric can be in any color\, but if black is used\, the piece will have a wonderful stained glass look.  This is a fun class for both beginner and experienced quilters.   \nStudents will have a choice of two Quilted Jigsaw projects\, the sunset or the mountain landscape. A kit is required for whichever one you choose – at a cost of $25\, which includes the pattern\, one yard of Pellon Wonder Under and the pre-traced black background fabric. Student supplies their own design fabrics. The projects measure approximately 11″ x 20″.

SUMMARY:Speaker: Paul Neumann\, SFVQA member\, "Piecing a Life Together"
DESCRIPTION:Paul is our in-house speaker for the June meeting.  He will be sharing his quilt journey with a talk titled\, “Piecing a Life Together.” Paul is honored to be asked to speak to the guild. He was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley\, graduated Cleveland High School in 1975\, and graduated CSUN Summa cum laude in 2014 with a teaching credential. He credits his mom with a love for crafting\, but didn’t get his own sewing machine until 23 years ago. Sewing a quilt was a dare to himself\, but he soon realized he needed classes to become more proficient. After all\, YouTube tutorials didn’t exist back then!  Nonetheless\, even with full time work\, Paul has created a large number of quilts in a number of wide ranging styles and techniques. He has a special fondness for red and white quilts\, civil war reproductions\, paper piecing\, and collecting Featherweights! He looks forward to sharing lessons learned in making quilts and sharing some of his opus from over the years. \nAs a special fund raiser for the guild\, he is raffling one of his white Singer Featherweights that night. Come and win your very own incomparable Singer Featherweight!\n \nGuests are welcome with a $5 fee for attendance. \nPaper Pieced Star quilt by Paul:\n \n  \n
