SUMMARY:Lecture: Kim Brownell\, "Wacky Fusion"
DESCRIPTION:Kim is known as the Wackydoodle Quilter due to her easy-going whimsical style.  Her work gravitates towards animals\, nature scenes\, and bright colors with techniques that include and blend fabric collage\, free-form art quilts and raw edge applique.  She has been quilting since 1993.  Her lecture will teach ideas on how to approach quilt challenges\, where to find them and why you should participate.  There will also be a trunk show of her quilts. \n

SUMMARY:Workshop: Quilted Jigsaw Puzzle Technique by Kim Brownell
DESCRIPTION:Using the quilted Jigsaw Puzzle technique\, students can combine two hobbies\, because it is very much like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle.  A raw-edge fusible applique is used\, leaving a negative space between each piece.  The background fabric can be in any color\, but if black is used\, the piece will have a wonderful stained glass look.  This is a fun class for both beginner and experienced quilters.   \nStudents will have a choice of two Quilted Jigsaw projects\, the sunset or the mountain landscape. A kit is required for whichever one you choose – at a cost of $25\, which includes the pattern\, one yard of Pellon Wonder Under and the pre-traced black background fabric. Student supplies their own design fabrics. The projects measure approximately 11″ x 20″.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Alaska Ruler Quilt Center with Paul Neumann
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will focus on making the center part of the Alaska Ruler Quilt (see below for photo of full quilt pattern)\, consisting of nine 9″ blocks.  With one border\, this wall quilt will measure 31″ square when finished. \nThere are three kinds of blocks in the pattern.  In the workshop\, you will focus and complete at least one of each of the three unique blocks that can be utilized in so many different quilt designs.  The pattern utilizes the Creative Grids Alaska Ruler (which will be available for sale at Quilty Pleasures); however\, Paul will provide paper templates for those who do not wish to buy one.  This project uses six fat quarters and one more for the 2″ border. \n\nFull quilt pattern – in this workshop you’ll be making the center part only. \n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Speaker: Paul Neumann\, SFVQA member\, "Piecing a Life Together"
DESCRIPTION:Paul is our in-house speaker for the June meeting.  He will be sharing his quilt journey with a talk titled\, “Piecing a Life Together.” Paul is honored to be asked to speak to the guild. He was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley\, graduated Cleveland High School in 1975\, and graduated CSUN Summa cum laude in 2014 with a teaching credential. He credits his mom with a love for crafting\, but didn’t get his own sewing machine until 23 years ago. Sewing a quilt was a dare to himself\, but he soon realized he needed classes to become more proficient. After all\, YouTube tutorials didn’t exist back then!  Nonetheless\, even with full time work\, Paul has created a large number of quilts in a number of wide ranging styles and techniques. He has a special fondness for red and white quilts\, civil war reproductions\, paper piecing\, and collecting Featherweights! He looks forward to sharing lessons learned in making quilts and sharing some of his opus from over the years. \nAs a special fund raiser for the guild\, he is raffling one of his white Singer Featherweights that night. Come and win your very own incomparable Singer Featherweight!\n \nGuests are welcome with a $5 fee for attendance. \nPaper Pieced Star quilt by Paul:\n \n  \n

The family moved from Missouri to California in the mid 1930’s and ended up in a small town in the bay area\, Albany. \nBetty came from a family of quilters. Her mother sent fabric scraps leftover from the clothes she made for the six kids back east to her grandmother in Oklahoma. Her grandmother hand pieced the scraps to make quilt tops and sent them back to California for Betty’s mother to quilt. \nBetty started making her own quilts in 1987.  She retired from Budweiser in 1995 and quilting became her life.  She joined the SCVQG (Santa Clarita Valley Quilt Guild) in 1995 and was a member about 10 years. She joined a mini group called Sisters in Stitches the same year.  This group is still together meeting every Wednesday at her house.  She also belongs to two other mini groups that meet once or twice a month\, the Tuesday Floozies and the Frazier Park the Pine Needles. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Our Charities\n Los Angeles Veterans Quilt Project \nSFVWW Cradles of Love \nFoster Children’s Resource Center \nMy Stuff Bags \nGlendale Adventist Cancer Center \nPenny Lane
