Jan Krentz Workshop: Quick Broken Star

The wait is over! Programs has been hard at work setting up workshops for 2020 and 2021. Several members were interested in taking a workshop with Jan Krentz after her lecture from the October meeting and programs jumped on getting that set up ASAP. The workshop will be her Quick Broken Star without Y seams from her book, Quick Star Quilts and Beyond. We have set up a virtual workshop on zoom for December 13 from 9:00am to 3:30pm. This includes a 30-minute lunch break.

You will learn how to sew this beautiful star quilt above with the ease of straight piecing, and no “Y” seams! You will be able to select several coordinating fabrics for the diamonds, background and borders. The Finished size: 58″ square without borders; approximately 65-68″ square with borders. This workshop is for Skilled Beginner & above. After talking to Jan, she said this quilt is pretty easy and everyone should have fun.

This will be a one-day workshop. Fabric selection is key to the quilt’s striking appearance. Design options and fabric placement will be discussed, aiding in final selection and cutting. Basic assembly begins in the afternoon. Confident students may pre-cut their fabrics prior to class, although this is unnecessary. Cutting will also take place in class. Please bring alternative fabrics you may be considering for your project. The Freckled Lily quilt features a large-scale printed floral, plus a coordinating bright stripe fabric which has been located in both the diamonds (fussy-cut to feature only the yellow-orange portion of the stripe) and the outside border.

Jan’s Tips from her website: Your quilt may feature a wide variety of fabrics, prints, batiks, etc. When cutting, you need a total of 32 diamonds, and may prefer to cut 4 groups of 8 diamonds, 2 groups of 16 diamonds, 8 groups of 4 diamonds, all 32 from different prints, etc. This quilt features a double border – the inner border matches the background (and is invisible in the photo). I recommend a similar double border for smaller quilts, or a border print for either quilt (border width is determined by the print width). She recommends large scale prints such as Kaffe Fassett, Laura Heine and Robin Pickens. Check around your house to see what you have and go from there.

The cost for the class is $40.00 and you supply your own fabric. You can pay by credit card or send a check to Debi Drake. If you have not used zoom, we will be setting up a practice run for everyone who is taking the class.

If you do not have one you can order from Jan. She has a limited supply, and the cost will be $18.00 for the ruler and shipping. Optional ruler is the #CGREU#2 Creative Grid ruler. You also can use a 6 ½” ruler.
